Health & Safety

Astley Hire has Health and Safety at the centre of its business. The policies and procedures are written into our ISO 9001 manual. For us it's not an add-on with lip service and little attention.

The safety of our own staff and that of our customers is something we care about. As a family run business the Directors, Stephen and Michael Dorricott, keep a watchful eye on all operations to ensure standards are driven up. In recognition of this effort, Astley Hire is one of the few companies with HAE SafeHire Certification.

We offer advice and give safety information with all our equipment. The demand for additional training on certain products has lead to the formation of Astley Hire's specialist Training division.

HV - High Vibration Level
Control measures required: risk assessment, surveillance, job rotation, alternative measures.
Vibration in m/s2 over 10.

medium hand arm vibration icon  

MV - Medium Vibration Level
Similiar measures to HV should be implemented.
Vibration in m/s2 5-10, 2 hours maximum daily use without further assessment.

low hand arm vibration icon  

LV - Low Vibration Level
Low level of risk.
Vibration in m/s2 below 5, 8 hours maximum daily use.

The above information is a simple guide for customers and you should obtain exact ratings for machines you are using. For each tool requiring a rating see key indicators for that piece of equipment.

Working at Height Regulations

The new legislation which came into effect in 2005 places certain responsibilities on employers.

The primary objective of the new legislation is to eliminate work at height where possible and where it is not possible to ensure that all work at height is performed safely and equipment has been appropriately selected, whether it is from a mobile access tower, scaffold or a ladder.

You must ensure that only trained competent persons are permitted to use the equipment.

The WAHR require employers and the self-employed to put into place arrangements for:

When selecting suitable work equipment account must be taken of the principles of Risk Assessment as required by the Regulation 3 or the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. The Risk Assessment and the action taken should be appropriate to the harm that could occur if no action was taken.

Where work at height cannot be eliminated/avoided, safe means of access/working should be considered.

You must plan and organise the work before it begins, carry out a full risk assessment and be guided by the findings.
